John Keel died eleven years ago, on July 3, 2009. I don’t know who took this photo, but I assume debauchery was involved.
The best way to remember John is to read his books. During the pandemic, people have been posting “shelfies,” so I’ll follow suit with a shot of my Keel shelf. Stay safe, Keel fans.
Wish I could have met him i person. Happy Fourth of July Doug!

Thanks, Doug! And a happy 4th of July to you, too! Nice collection of Keel books. My wife just plucked Jadoo off our shelf to read again. Any idea of the story behind the “Keel for King” pin?

Marsh — John made those up around 1970, along with some bumper stickers. He apparently handed them out at an INFO Fortfest in 1973. Here’s the bumper sticker: http://www.johnkeel.com/?p=669

Hi, Doug. Thanks for these great postings. Like so many others, I’ve always been fascinated by the possible origins of the strange——sometimes outright bizarre and/or menacing——telephone voices. During research for my nonfiction book, BLACK LIGHT: Perspectives on Mysterious Phenomena (Oblivion Press/2014), I located useful material: Martin Cannon’s THE CONTROLLERS, Walter Bowart’s OPERATION MIND CONTROL, William Poundstone’s BIG SECRETS and——of course!——Keel’s OPERATION TROJAN HORSE. Speculations (never anything so solid as a theory) emerged from these texts pointing toward 1). Drug runners’ code, using sped-up or “screech broadcasts,” number-reading, and rapid-fire “foreign-sounding” voices to be recorded for later normal-speed playback/decoding. 2). U.S. intelligence black-ops, claiming workable hypnotic trance via telephone (early 1950s), documented in Senate hearings covering projects ARTICHOKE, BLUEBIRD, and MKULTRA. 3). U.S. intelligence “call-backs” fishing for information from private citizens who’d chanced upon the operations while messing around with what used to be called “loop lines,” unassigned numbers used by telephone companies to test new exchanges.

Interesting to compare this shelf to mine; I have multiple copies of “Our Haunted Planet” due to the obvious revisions made–deletion of L. Ron Hubbard, chiefly!

Thanks, John, for everything you wrote. Stumbling over something by John that I haven’t read is one of the joys of life! Warmest and best Fourth of July wishes to all Americans from an Aussie who has the greatest of good will for your country.

Paul — His publisher made him take that out. He signed my copy, “Do not read pages 128-129 or the Goonies will get you.”

I haven’t kept up with all the theories about those. I remember puzzling over recordings of them years ago. Are they still broadcasting, or have newer technologies changed everything?

Did the Church of Sci lean on Fawcett Books?

I don’t think so, but they had a reputation for being litigious, and Fawcett didn’t want any trouble.
