JOHN KEEL NOT AN AUTHORITY ON ANYTHING

Guía de Isora We pick up the thread in John’s ongoing investigation of Jaye Paro. This time, she claims to have been visited by a certain Colonel John Lewis Dalton, who questioned her about UFOs and asked her to fill out a long questionnaire. Meanwhile, Princess Moon Owl is calling up contactees. As usual, John takes notes on it all, with increasing exasperation, adding, “So things are getting more and more involved.”

Mothman’s first official sighting took place fifty years ago, on November 15, 1966. On that night, Roger and Linda Scarberry and Steve and Mary Mallette reported that they saw a large winged creature in the TNT area in Point Pleasant, West Virginia, touching off a very peculiar year indeed. Here is Roger Scarberry’s sketch, and the first two editions of John’s book, both published in 1975 by the Saturday Review Press. The design for the first, by the way, is by Peter Parnall, better known for his wildlife drawings. There’s no better way to mark this anniversary than to read The Mothman Prophecies!

The story continues! John sends Jaye Paro a page of questions for Apol and Agar; she sees them in a restaurant, and they answer some of them. Princess Moon Owl is acting up, and a man from Air Force Intelligence wants to meet with Paro. Or so she says…

John’s investigation into Jaye Paro’s supposed contacts continues. She reports that Apol and Agar visited her apartment, and ate an enormous amount of salt. They also gave her a sulpha tablet, which made her very ill. John plans to drive to Long Island an investigate in person…

John’s account continues, with his notes on Jaye Paro’s taped interview with Princess Moon Owl. He’s troubled by both the interview and Paro’s suggestion that they lie about it.

The Princess tried to call John; he kept the phone message his roommate gave him. And there’s another odd development: the caller apparently did not have the Princess’s exaggerated Southern accent.

John’s eventual response to Paro’s claims was simply: “Let’s see what she comes up with next.”

John’s daily record of 1967 continues. Jaye Paro reports that she had a strange visitor at the radio station: the “kind of nutsy” Princess Moon Owl. Much of the Princess’s story is patently ridiculous, leaving John even more baffled as to what all this means.

John had sent back the disk Jaye Paro claimed her contacts had given her, with a letter asking to meet with one of them, Mr. Apol. Ms. Paro reports that the letter arrived, apparently opened, and that the disk was damaged. She also tells John that Apol and Agar have been spotted by other people around town.

In the midst of his continuing drama with Jaye Paro and her unusual contacts, John answers a letter from Jerome Clark. He touches on many aspects of his and others’ research, assesses government interest in UFOs, reports on a radio show he did with Jim Moseley and Tim Beckley, and touches on the material he’s getting from Paro.

In the next selection from John’s “Special Cases” file, he follows through on the information from Jaye Paro’s supposed contacts. He notes the Biblical associations of their names, analyzes and returns the disk they gave her, and writes a letter requesting a meeting with Mr. Apol. He is, as usual, thorough.
